I've been wanting to paint fish since studying the old masters. They did fish, lobsters and table foods. My guess is they painted what was available. These fish have faces like eels but they are in the trout/salmon family and live in fresh waters. They take a long time to mature but can become huge and monsterish looking. They are called Taimen.

Siberian taimen, also known as the common taimen, Siberian giant trout or Siberian salmon, is a species of salmon-like ray-finned fish from the genus Hucho in the family Salmonidae. These fish are found in rivers in Russia and adjacent regions, and are harvested throughout the year. The are considered river monsters because of their size and they attack their pray with ferociousness. They are very slow growing. The species had long enjoyed relative peace in Mongolia, where Buddhists revere it as the child of an ancient river spirit. Mongolia’s nomadic culture has traditionally eschewed fishing. But as lifestyles have shifted in modernizing Mongolia, logging, mining, and grazing have harmed water quality in the taimen’s range, threatening the fish there.
